“Something’s not right with the samples, or the crime scene was contaminated,” Katelyn told Cameron as they sat in her car after reaching the station. “I guess there’s nothing to be done, though, since it’s all over.”

“I don’t think it is, but with all the evidence gone—”

“Maybe your chief could get us a search warrant to search Tenor’s quarters at the farm again,” Katelyn cut in.

“I’ll ask him,” he said. “I’m just glad I’m not the only one who thinks something is wrong.”

Katelyn frowned. “What doesn’t make sense is that Tenor would suicide by cop if he’s this big-shot killer. We don’t even really have any answers for why he did what he did.”

“I know. The guy that attacked me—”

“You were attacked by Tenor?”

“I presume it was him,” Cameron said.

“When was this?” Katelyn asked, twisting to face him.

“It was the morning he died.”

“He wasn’t at the farm?” she asked. “What time was he supposed to be at work?”

“I didn’t check,” Cameron replied. “I assumed Cove and Gage did.”

“You need to find out,” she said. “If he was on duty, that means he was working with a partner and that person is still walking around out there.”

“I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know if Cove could get the warrant.”

“Great. Uh, you want to grab some burgers tonight at Breeze? It’s a gay club.”

“Around here?”

“It’s only about five years old,” she told him. “The LGBT community is small but alive. We keep it low-key, and it works for us.”

“I’ll find out if Cove wants to go out.”

“Even if he doesn’t, you can join us,” she said. “You really need to find your own tribe. He grew up here. He has some friends.”

“I know,” Cameron agreed. “How about seven?”

“See you there,” she said.

He smiled, climbed out of the car, and headed up to the police station. He wasn’t sure he was going to be going to Cove’s tonight after their argument today. They both might need a little space.

Cameron made his way inside and stopped at the front desk. “Hey, Molly.”

“Hey, Cameron,” she said with a smile. “The chief wants to see you in his office.”

“Thanks.” He tapped the desk before moving past. Cameron wondered what Cove could want, but he did need to talk to him about getting a warrant.

Cameron knocked on the closed door of Cove’s office and entered at the muffled “come in.”

“Cameron,” Cove said, his tone preoccupied.

“Hey.”

“I need your report,” Cove said. “The samples Karr brought over.”

“Oh, right,” he said. “Only two of them match the samples from the crime scenes. The rest contain plant matter from other sources. I’d like to go back to the Tenor’s room at the farm. Could you get a warrant?”

Cove looked up then. “No real cause with Tenor being dead.”

“Even if I don’t think he was working alone? Katelyn feels the same way.”

“Cam—”

“Was Tenor at work when I was attacked? That would have been between seven and eight.”

Cove frowned. “I’m not sure,” he said. “Let me check the report.” He pulled up a report on the computer on his desk.
